A prolog implementation of the Method of Euler Circles for syllogistic reasoning

چکیده

This paper presents a prolog implementation of syllogistic logic, based on the Individual Identiication Algorithm (IIA) (Stenning & Yule 1996), which has been shown to be relevant to human performance in syllogistic reasoning tasks. The IIA is isomorphic to the Method of Euler Circles (Euler 1772), and turns on the iden-tiication of necessary individuals prior to drawing quantiied conclusions. Three variants of the method are presented: (1) Individual Identiication in the case of two premisses, (2) Individual Identiication in the case of multiple premisses, and (3) Drawing quantiied conclusions in the case of two premisses. The complete prolog code for each variant is included, along with examples.

The Mediating Role of Artefacts in Deductive Reasoning

We present the results of an experiment designed to investigate the mediating role of artefacts in syllogistic reasoning. The aim of the experiment is to compare a new form of representation of the premises, designed according to the Models Theory, with two “classical” representations (Euler circles and Propositions). The results provide preliminary empirical evidence for both hypothesis of the...

How can Euler diagrams improve syllogistic reasoning?

The present study investigates the question of whether and how Euler diagrams can improve syllogistic reasoning. Previous research reports that there is no evidence to show the psychological advantage of Euler diagrams in solving syllogisms. In our experiments, we use Euler diagrams with “named points”, which are formulated within the simple Euler system introduced in our previous work. The dia...

Extending the Qualitative Trajectory Calculus Based on the Concept of Accessibility of Moving Objects in the Paths

Qualitative spatial representation and reasoning are among the important capabilities in intelligent geospatial information system development. Although a large contribution to the study of moving objects has been attributed to the quantitative use and analysis of data, such calculations are ineffective when there is little inaccurate data on position and geometry or when explicitly explaining ...

On the Cognitive Efficacy of Euler Diagrams in Syllogistic Reasoning: A Relational Perspective

Although logic diagrams are widely used as methods for introducing students to elementary logical reasoning, it is still open to debate in cognitive psychology whether diagrams can aid untrained people to successfully conduct deductive reasoning. In our previous work, some empirical evidence was provided for the effectiveness of a certain type of logic diagrams in the process of solving categor...

Syllogistic Reasoning as a Basis for Combination of Evidence in Expert Systems

In the presence of uncertainty, computation of the certainty factor of a hypothesis requires, in general, the availability of rules for combining evidence under chaining, dis-junction and conjunction. The method described in this paper is based on the use of what may be viewed as a generalization of syllogistic reasoning in classical logic-a generalization in which numerical or, more generally,...
